Denver to Christchurch

We left Denver on Saturday evening (September 26th) and arrived in Christchurch, New Zealand on Monday around 10:00 in the morning.  We lost a day crossing the international dateline.  New Zealand time is 17 hours ahead of Denver time.  So, when we arrived at Christchurch it was about 3:00 pm on Sunday in Denver.  It had been 24 hours since Alice and I had left home for the airport.

We found Saturday evening a good time to fly out of DIA.  There weren’t very many passengers about and we didn’t even have to wait in line at the security station.  Our initial leg took us from Denver to Los Angeles.  The flight itself was full, but we departed on time and arrived in L.A. early, after a fairly smooth flight.

Once at the L.A. airport, we had plenty of time to catch the connection to Auckland, We had a pleasant walk outside from the domestic terminal to the international terminal.  Later, the layover in Auckland wasn’t nearly as long.  Consequently, we were rushed and a little tense.

The flight from L.A. to Auckland was very, very long.  Two meals were served.  Each passenger had over 100 movies, TV shows, games and music he/she could choose between.  Mike said he watched 3 different movies.  Neither one of us got much sleep.

Even though we felt rushed, getting through customs in Auckland was pretty easy.  Everyone was friendly and helpful.  Again, we had a fairly long walk to get from one terminal to another.

The flight from Auckland to Christchurch took about 1.5 hours.  It was a great feeling to know that we had finally reached our destination, at least for the day.  The flight to McMurdo wouldn’t be for a couple of days at the earliest.

The weather in New Zealand has been wet, cool and overcast.   But, it being early spring, everything is very green.  There are loads of spring flowers along with flowering trees and bushes everywhere you look.
